About the name
Benedict of Nursia (480-547) is regarded as the father of Western monasticism. His Rule, often summarised by the phrase “pray and work”, laid an important foundation for the cultural development of Europe. Pope Paul VI, who proclaimed him Patron Saint of Europe in 1964, described him as a messenger of peace, a builder of unity, a teacher of civilisation and a herald of Christianity.
