About the name
Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373) was married and the mother of eight children. Following the death of her husband, she chose monastic life and founded the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, commonly known as the Bridgettine Order. In 1349, she moved to Rome, where she worked tirelessly for the reform of the Church and for the return of the Pope from Avignon to Rome. She is revered as a great mystic. In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Co-Patroness of Europe.
