About the name
The brothers Cyril (826-869) and Methodius (815-885) came from a Greek family. Although they had the opportunity to pursue political careers, they chose monastic life instead. The Emperor sent them on a mission to Pannonia and the Slavic territories. At the invitation of the Pope, they later travelled to Rome. They are best known for translating liturgical texts into the Slavic language. In 1980, Pope John Paul II proclaimed them Co-Patrons of Europe.
