About the name
Joseph Gargitter (1917-1991) served as Bishop of the Diocese of Brixen and, following the reorganisation of diocesan boundaries in 1964, of the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen. During his tenure, the bishop’s seat was transferred to Bolzano and the Nikolaus Cusanus Academy was built. His episcopal motto was “Animam pro ovibus” (“Life for the sheep”). Inspired by the Gospel of John, it refers to the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep.
