About the name
Josef Mayr (1910–1945) was born at the Nusserhof farm in Bolzano. From a young age, he was actively involved in various church groups, working to support the poor, those in need, and young people. In 1942, he married Hildegard Straub, who, like Josef, was deeply religious and active in the Catholic youth movement. In 1944, Josef was conscripted into the SS. Because he declared that, for religious reasons, he could not swear an oath of allegiance to Hitler, he was arrested and sentenced to death. On his way to Dachau, he died on the railway grounds in Erlangen. He left behind his wife Hildegard, who supported his decision, and their two-year-old son. In 2017, Pope Francis beatified him as a martyr.
